Thursday, January 29th

The Paul Collins Beat + Gentleman Jesse & His Men, the Flips, DJ Explode @ Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior), 9 p.m.

The legendary Paul Collins (the Nerves, the Beat) gets all power-pop treacly and punk snarly with his latest release Ribbon of Gold. The down-to-earth venue and the stellar opening acts will make this show one to make the extra effort for, even though it’s a school night.

Curumin + DJ Andy Noble @ Stonefly Brewery (735 E. Chambers Street), 9 p.m.

Melding both heritage (Japanese/Brazilian) into his smooth and skillful DJing, Curumin spins a variety of sounds and beats: hip hop, lounge, funk and electronica; genre-bending and blending to give these sounds and beats an effortless but significant taste of his native Brazil.

 Friday, January 30th

Masonry + Mother Orchis, Dear Astronaut @ The Cactus Club (2496 S. Wentworth), 10 p.m.

Somewhere in the depths of our hearts, Wisconsinites warm up to all things shadowy and dark in these bleak winter months. Indulge yourselves with this trio of intensely melodic and heav y rockers, as sonically close to being trapped in a blizzard while traveling across a frozen Lake Michigan…except, this time around, you might magically find yourself indoors, and the only frosty thing you’ll be in contact with is a cold beverage.

Saturday, January 31st

Brief Candles + Gospel Gossip, Group of the Altos @ Cactus Club (2496 S. Wentworth), 10 p.m.

Milwaukee’s experts on everything sonically gauzy, The Brief Candles are capable of turning crushing distortion into melodic walls thick enough that you just might be able to take your earplugs out, set them free, and they’d hover mid-air.

I couldn’t stick around for Paul Collins, but both opening acts were great!
