Top 5 of 2008: TJ’s Albums

Fan-Belt contributor TJ Fackelman is program coordinator for Milwaukee Film. Here are his picks for Top 5 Albums of 2008.

1. The Magnetic Fields, Distortion
Substituting tunes hating on California girls and extolling the virtues of getting wasted to forget a past love for cheery songs about pretty girls, and fuzzed out distortion-laden riffs for jangly guitars, the latest from The Magnetic Fields, fronted by Stephen Merritt, sounds like an ironic version of The Beach Boys.

2. Crystal Castles, Crystal Castles
The best electronic release of the year, Crystal Castles’ debut album is constantly changing, drawing you in with each new blip, bloop, and every other electronic noise, while never forgetting one over-arching goal: to make an incredibly danceable album.

3. El Guincho, Alegranza!
Sure, this album sounds a lot like like Panda Bear’s Person Pitch from last year, especially if Manu Chao had collaborated with him on it, but the tropical repetition created by layering tons of found sound samples makes everyday seem warm and sunny.

4. Girl Talk, Feed the Animals
Take one part 90’s indie rock, one part classic rock, two parts hip-hop and rap, and another part pure pop; blend equally with nostalgia and irony; garnish with Rick Astley. Enjoy!

5. Lindstrom, Where You Go I Go Too
With just three tracks spanning 55 minutes, WYGIGT was the best album of 2008 to listen to at work. Not because it’s good background music, but because Lindstrom makes it sound so damn easy to create a sonic landscape of disco beats that keep falling over each other on their way toward the next surprise peak.

Fuck Buttons, Colours Move
Deerhoof, Offend Maggie
Marnie Stern, This is it …
TV on the Radio, Dear Science
Lupe Fiasco, The Cool
Blitzen Trapper, Wild Mountain Nation

I’m glad someone recognized Crystal Castles. Its looking as if it is going to be snubbed on many best of lists for 08.
