Top Five of 2008: Metal records

Fan-Belt contributor and resident metal-head Andrew Falk shares his Top Five metal records of 2008. Here they are in alphabetical order:

Gigan, The Order of the False Eye
This young Florida band takes Erosion of Sanity-era Gorguts into outer space with their avant-metal debut LP. I hope to see these guys develop the genre of cyborg alien sci-fi-metal on further releases and tours soon.

Harvey Milk, Life… The Best Game in Town
This veteran experimental act has crafted their most immediate songs without sacrificing their own style. The amazing “Motown” barely qualifies as metal due to its melodic verse groove, gloriously belted chorus, and lovely harmonized dual guitar solo. But like all the other songs on the album, it’s all covered with dirt and gravel.

Kill the Client
, Cleptocracy
The second full-length from Texas’s Kill the Client removes any trace of the slow, dirgey material from their first album in favor of volatile, vehement grind nuggets that will make you bang your head so fast that it might snap off.

Leviathan, Massive Conspiracy Against All Life
Black metal is usually not my cup of tea due to its style-over-substance aesthetic and minimal concern with musicianship, but this record stuffed furious drumming behind evil riffs and disgusting, suicidal screams mixed with plenty of atmosphere. Leviathan has created a memorable and appropriately grim set of songs.
[does not appear to have a website… how cult!]

Parlamentarisk Sodomi, Har Du Sagt “A” Får Du Si “Nal”
And the Fan-Belty for Best New Grindcore Artist goes to… Parlamentarisk Sodomi! This one-man band from Norway appeared out of nowhere with an absolutely raging debut that knocked this jaded old heard-it-all-before metalhead right on his ass.

Honorable Mention:
Cynic, Traced in Air
Gridlink, Amber Grey
Meshuggah, Obzen
Rotten Sound, Cycles
Prostitute Disfigurement, Descendants of Depravity
Trap Them, Seizures in Barren Praise
