Word Perfect: Monday nights @ the Red Room

Walking into the Red Room on Humbolt Ave. on Monday night, I got a pretty good crash course on the young upstarts of Milwaukee’s hip-hop scene. There’s KingHellBastard‘s Dana Coppafeel behind the bar hustlin’ Pabsts and Heinekens; fellow KHB emcee DNA is over sharing a booth with some ladies, and some of the House of M crew would stop in later in the evening, so would the cats from Marlo.

So what’s happening on a Monday night that brings out some of the scene’s heavy hitters? It’s the weekly cipher (jam session) called Word Perfect Mondays – a hot combination of open-mic spoken word and freestyle hip-hop, hosted by a Milwaukee artist you might or might not know (but should): Joshua the Scribe.

The Scribe used to host the popular Tuesday night Rising Tides event at the Mosaic on Downer Ave. before it closed last March. I hate using the word ‘quintessential,’ but the word sums him as he relates to the growing collective movement that’s happening with Milwaukee hip-hop and spoken word.

Stay tuned for a feature about The Scribe and the growing collective of young Milwaukee hip-hop artists, coming soon to Fan-Belt.
