Friday sleeper pick: Benevento-Russo Duo at Miramar Theater

Couldn’t get tickets to The Black Keys show? Fear not. The Keys aren’t only the power duo playing in Milwaukee on Friday.

I saw Brooklyn’s Benevento-Russo Duo blow the doors off the Briggs & Stratton Stage at Summerfest this past July. The crowd that had staked out bleachers for the headlining O.A.R. show didn’t know what hit them.

The organ/drums combo made their name nationally in 2006, touring with Phish’s Trey Anastasio and Mike Gordon. Their climactic tension-release grooves are the jam scene gold standard, but don’t get the wrong idea: The music is raw, visceral and to the point, bereft of unneccesary noodling. Imagine Herbie Hancock jamming with The Kinks, and you get a pretty good idea of what they’re about. Lots of jazzy progressions drenched in raunchy overdrive, and drums beaten with the fury of Meg White and the precision of Art Blakey. A great combination of brains and brawn that shouldn’t be missed.

Catch the Benevento-Russo Duo 9:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 5 at Miramar Theater, 2844 N. Oakland Ave. Indianapolis psych-glam quintet Everthus the Deadbeats opens the show. $16.
