Everyone knows that spur-of-the-moment road trips are good for the soul. So if you have not already blown this popsicle stand for the Bamalama Fest in Huntsville, AL this weekend, you still have time. Jump in the car or hop on a bus and head down for a sweaty (temps in the 90s and nary a raindrop in sight!), music-packed weekend featuring a line-up of some of the best touring bands out there, across genres.

For $25, you get three days of music, food, booze, an art + zine festival and a moon bounce. Oh, and some familiar faces. Not only are Milwaukee music fans arriving in veritable droves, but Milwaukee bands are also making a dent in a line-up dominated by Southern sounds: Plexi-3, Jail and The Kind of Jazz Music That Kills (Holy Shit! had to cancel). This list alone is a testament to the diversity of the music being showcased this weekend.

The show was organized by one Zach Jeffries, who really just wanted to see what it was like to throw a party with a moon bounce. Actually, as a more frequented stop by independent bands these days, Huntsville is part of the ever-growing national basement that exists, thanks to relentless touring, the kindness of strangers, and the Internet. However, unless you have been there, or know someone who’s been there, it is not an obvious first choice as a show destination. So, Zach did what anyone would do in this situation: create a festival!

When asked if Milwaukee has a special bond with Huntsville, Zach theorized that it probably all started back in 1999, when the Huntsville Stars became the AA Minor League affiliate of the Brewers. Although, a 10-hour, straight-shot drive doesn’t hurt. The two cities have also shared residents in the past, housed each others’ bands and even shared Holy Shit!’s drummer, when the Thomas Function was without.

Should your weekend be booked, fear not. If all goes well, and it should, you can put this on the calendar for next year. The festival is June 6, 7, 8 at the Flying Monkey Arts Center, a not-for-profit community arts collective.

Yes, sadly. It wound up in our digital mitts a little late, but hopefully, it will at least alert the uninformed about its existence. Hopefully.
