The Chain (EP release) + Brute Heart @ Mad Planet (533 E. Center), 10 p.m.

‘Mysterious’ is the one word used most often to describe Milwaukee’s psych-dance outfit The Chain, but the definition of mysterious in this case really equals no MySpace page (gasp!), no photos (double-gasp!) and no recordings…until now. Catch your breath, youngster. The Chain is planning to document their recorded materialization with an official EP release party at the Mad Planet tonight along with Minnesota’s Brute Heart. The band’s worldly-inspired music from a bygone era will finally be available to have mini dance sessions in the comfort of your own home.

Retribution Gospel Choir + Into Arcadia, Group of the Altos @ Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior), 9 p.m.

Those anxiously awaiting another album from Minnesota’s minimalist folk-rockers Low, don’t necessarily have to wait too much as long as Alan Sparhawk continues to crank out songs in the same vein with his alternate outfit, Retribution Gospel Choir.

Kings Go Forth (CD release) + JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound @ Turner Hall Ballroom (1032 N. 4th), 8 p.m.

Kings Go Forth’s timeless sound has created a natural buzz around the ten-piece combo, all on its own. Milwaukee has had no trouble gravitating to KGF’s sweet retro dish-outs, which would have given Curtis Mayfield a run for his jingle-jangling musical money back in his heyday. Now that the rest of the world is perking up their ears (lately, David Byrne of Talking Heads/the Luaka Bop label fame), Milwaukee should revel in having the supergroup all to themselves for the moment.

The Flips + Cry Coyote, Eva Grubb aboard The Iroquois (101 W. Michigan), 8:30 p.m.

The Flips bring all the best about girl groups from the 50s and 60s back to the forefront of the current scene with loads of fun and style. So, what could possibly be more fun than adding a boat show into the mix? Not too much, right?  The band on a boat set-up is something the Milwaukee Boat Line is pro at doing, and The Flips, undoubtedly, will make a splash with fans of the alluring combination of sound waves and water waves.

Thursday, January 29th

The Paul Collins Beat + Gentleman Jesse & His Men, the Flips, DJ Explode @ Club Garibaldi’s (2501 S. Superior), 9 p.m.

The legendary Paul Collins (the Nerves, the Beat) gets all power-pop treacly and punk snarly with his latest release Ribbon of Gold. The down-to-earth venue and the stellar opening acts will make this show one to make the extra effort for, even though it’s a school night.

Curumin + DJ Andy Noble @ Stonefly Brewery (735 E. Chambers Street), 9 p.m.

Melding both heritage (Japanese/Brazilian) into his smooth and skillful DJing, Curumin spins a variety of sounds and beats: hip hop, lounge, funk and electronica; genre-bending and blending to give these sounds and beats an effortless but significant taste of his native Brazil.

 Friday, January 30th

Masonry + Mother Orchis, Dear Astronaut @ The Cactus Club (2496 S. Wentworth), 10 p.m.

Somewhere in the depths of our hearts, Wisconsinites warm up to all things shadowy and dark in these bleak winter months. Indulge yourselves with this trio of intensely melodic and heav y rockers, as sonically close to being trapped in a blizzard while traveling across a frozen Lake Michigan…except, this time around, you might magically find yourself indoors, and the only frosty thing you’ll be in contact with is a cold beverage.

Brief Candles + Gospel Gossip, Group of the Altos @ Cactus Club (2496 S. Wentworth), 10 p.m.

Milwaukee’s experts on everything sonically gauzy, The Brief Candles are capable of turning crushing distortion into melodic walls thick enough that you just might be able to take your earplugs out, set them free, and they’d hover mid-air.
