Alright. It’s after 3 p.m. on the eve of New Year’s, and either you’ve settled in for a quality evening with the Star Wars trilogy, are preparing party snacks or are sitting on the proverbial fence of where to spend your last moments of 2009 that will be memorable, fun, slightly sane and won’t leave you with an ‘uh-oh’ empty wallet. Here are a few options for the final evening of the year that will offer all these things if you don’t have a house party to call home or a place to crash out and wait until it’s all over; because, after all, it’s just another night like any other, right?
The Get Down + The Chain @ the Bay View Brew Haus (2535 S. Kinnickinnic), 9 p.m.
If all you want to do is dance, dance, dance, then dancing’s what you’ll get at the Bay View Brew Haus, who play host to popular soul and funk soiree-hoster’s, the Get Down. Free falafel included in the cover which also includes an appearance by Milwaukee’s most intriguing instrumental group, The Chain.
The Championship + John the Savage @ the Cactus Club (2496 S. Wentworth), 10 p.m.
Two of Milwaukee’s solid local favorites, the Championship and John the Savage pair up for a performance that will combine twangy Americana with a blustery rock orchestra, offering what should be a lively and unpredictably fun evening.
A Tortured Soul + Mermeroth, Burial Ritual, Dark Grave, Luciferium & the WMSE Team Metal DJs, Jason and Ellie @ Vnuk’s (5036 S. Packard), 9 p.m.
If you’re of the more apocalyptic mindset for New Year’s, Vnuk’s is packing plenty of doom into the final hours of the year. Five metal bands and two metal DJs will help you ring in the new year in shades of black.
The Glamour + Double Drop, Jason Samonik, Brian Z, etc. @ Stonefly (735 E. Center), 10 p.m.
The Glamour was out of town for the ’08/’09 New Year’s celebration, heading south to Chicago, but this year, their hometown has them secured for a dance party at Stonefly. Asher Gray (Diamonds) and Richard Galling (Richard Richard) are celebrating ten years of spinning house music with a couple releases under their belts.
The Goodnight Loving + Beach Patrol, Tim Schweiger & the Middlemen, the Magic Words @ Linneman’s (1001 E. Locust), 10 p.m.
What better way to ring in a new year than with some of the best garage bands in Milwaukee? Goodnight Loving and Beach Patrol are vets and play their instruments with plenty of precision in a distortion and jangle-laden genre. The Magic Words, fronted by ex-Doom Buggy vocalist, Molly Rosenblum, are a solid new contender, mixing a little 90′s with their garage tendencies.
